Thailand: Political Problems Won't Affect Our AFF Hosting Duties
Football Association of Thailand (FAT) President Worawi Makudi dismissed reports yesterday that the current political troubles in
Thailand will cause December’s AFF Suzuki Cup to be moved to Malaysia.
Singapore media has suggested that co-hosting duties of the eight-national regional tournament could be switched to Kuala Lumpur if Bangkok was deemed to be too dangerous.
Demonstrations in Bangkok have led to airports being closed.
"I would like to confirm that the tournament will go ahead on schedule," Worawi said according to The Bangkok Post.
The tournament kicks off on December 5 in Indonesia and Thailand are in action the following day.
Thailand face Laos, Malaysia and Vietnam in the group stage.
"I told the other three teams that are in our group that if planes cannot land at Suvarnabhumi airport then we have Don Mueang and also U-Tapao,” added Worawi.
"As the host of the tournament, we cannot cancel or change things 10 days before the tournament begins," he said.
"We have prepared a lot for the tournament and if we cannot host it then it will give Thailand a bad reputation."
